Here They Are
Smith/Doorstop 2026

We can overhear the conversation between (im)patient publisher and hesitating author: ‘Where are those poems you’ve been promising me?’ ‘Well, here they are – what do you think?’ Peter Sansom obviously thought they should be published forthwith, and Here They Are was published in the hot summer of 2026. The poet reflects:

Poetry sometimes goes its own way, abandoning storytelling and lyric and following instead ‘the way of language’, discovering for a change what it has to say — more interesting than what the ‘I’ intended.

This short, compelling collection fits John Ashbery’s description of Michael Schmidt’s poetry as ‘at once earthy and numinous’.
