Honorary degrees and Medals of Honour are the University of Manchester’s ’s highest awards, and nominations come from current University students, alumni, staff and members of the Board of Governors or General Assembly. The Medal recognises Michael Schmidt’s significant contribution to publishing in Manchester, which includes founding the leading international poetry journal, PN Review (which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023) and being Publisher and Editor of Carcanet, one of the great poetry presses. From its Manchester base, Carcanet has published the work of new and established UK and international poets, including several Nobel Prize winners.
In his citation Professor John McAuliffe, poet and Director of Creative Manchester, said:
“Michael Schmidt is a true citizen of the world, a good and faithful servant to poetry, whose enthusiasms and whose drive and infectious belief in the power of books have been a glory, for more than 50 years of the University, the city of Manchester, and the global literary community.”
